Another day, another party.
The catering vanâs parked out front when I get back from my run. Weights alone werenât cutting it today. Iâd been more on edge than ever after yesterdayâs run-in with Leo.
And Addie. As if I could forget Addie.
Leo Iâd expected. Heâs always looking for a fight with me. Addie . . . thatâs another story.
That kiss is burned into my skull. But I canât stop thinking about the hurt look in her eyes before I walked away either. That look has been haunting me for the last twenty-four hours, and Iâm itching for a fight to get rid of this feeling. But Iâm still pissed at her too.
I shouldnât be. I donât even know why I am. I stopped expecting anything from anyone a long time ago. But for some reason, Iâd still expected more from her.
But no. Addieâs just another suck-up pushover. And she was using me.
I shake my head and slow my pace as I reach the front door.
The guests havenât started arriving yet, but Leoâs parents are here. Richâs cherry red Maserati isnât exactly easy to miss and itâs parked right next to the Jeep my biological father gifted me out of guilt.
Part of me had wanted to throw it back in his face. Maybe I would have if heâd presented it with some sort of speech. But in true Rudy fashion, heâd avoided all interaction with me, muttering something about how Iâd need a ride to get around town before heading back to his office.
So I kept it, because while I might be bitter as hell toward the old man, Iâm not a total idiot. I do need a ride if Iâm to have any freedom around here. And the best part about this new Jeep? I can sell it for cash when I turn eighteen.
I head straight to my room to change, but the second I come back out into the hallway, I hear their voices from the living room.
âHe started another fight with my son,â Rich says.
I stop out of sight, just beside the doorway. It doesnât take a genius to know theyâre talking about me.
Though the fact that I picked a fight with Leo is news. Iâd stayed in my room last night, skipping family dinner with good olâ Rudy and Marsha.
âNot now, Richard,â Marsha says with an exasperated sigh.
My lips twitch. Is it juvenile to enjoy Richâs scolding? Yeah. Definitely. But ask me if I care.
âItâs not just Leo Iâm worried about,â Rich says.
I roll my eyes upward and find myself staring at a chandelier. Worried about poor little Leo, is he? How sweet.
âLeo says heâs dating someone?â Eloise adds this tentatively. Her voice is a million times softer than Richâs, and she sounds concerned.
âThatâs news to us,â Marsha says slowly.
As usual, Marshaâs speaking on behalf of Rudy too. I can count the words Iâve heard Rudy say on one hand since Iâve arrived. Marshaâs covered the rest.
âA nice girl,â Rich mutters. âSheâs the hospital directorâs daughter, did you know that?â
This causes a reaction from someone.
